Richard Kueng
Department Head of Quantum Computing
Richard Kueng is currently the head of the department for quantum computing at the Johannes Kepler University Linz and an elected member of the Young Austrian Academy of Sciences. Beforere turning to his hometown Linz in 2020, he spent almost 15 years studying andworking abroad: Zuerich, Cambridge, Freiburg, Sydney, Cologne, Berlin, Los Angeles. From 2017-2020 he was a researcher at the California Institute of Technology, where he collaborated closely with Google and Amazon. There he also co-developed the classical shadow formalism -- a new quantum-classical interface that made a lasting impact on modern quantum technologies.
Richard Kueng received several awards and distinctions. Among them are the Willi Studer Prize of ETH Zurich (2013), the Kardinal Innitzer Prize (2022), the Kepler Award for Teaching Innovation (2023) and the Frontiers of Science Award (2025) at the International Congress of Basic Science in Beijing. He also received Starting Grants from the Austrian Science Fund FWF and the European Research Council.
